Muskies/Pikes Part 2
Muskies are a type of Pike. They get anywhere from 3-5 ft (I am 5′1″, so that is frightening) and over 66lbs. The Pike can get as large as 30 inches sometimes larger. To tell a Musky from a Pike you have to look at the coloring. Muskies have vertical strip almost spotted where Pike have horizontial markings and do not get as big as muskies (which is a slight relief). Neither fish have spines which enables them to swim faster than other fish.Like the Pike a Musky will eat anything that moves being known to eat full grown ducks. Both fish have a top and bottom row of sharp teeth.
Both types of fish can be found in our lake system but also in our rivers also in Canada and Michigan. Both mostly stay to weeds for ambush attacks but can be located in deeper water.
One website I found nicknamed the Pike the “Water Wolf”. The Musky nickname is “King of Freshwater”.
Next I will tackle (ha) the large Catfish!!
